Which tontau is right for your garden? Here you’ll find everything about our three products – clear and simple.
How tontau works
All tontau products use the same principle: the natural capillary action of clay. Low-fired clay draws water on its own and delivers it directly to the roots – exactly as much as the plant needs at any given moment.

No. tontau works completely without electricity, batteries, or electronics – and without water pressure. You can connect it to a rain barrel. With mains water, we recommend a pressure reducer (max. 1 bar).
Which hose should I use?
We recommend ¾″ hoses. ½″ works too but requires more care. Our tip: Gardena Comfort HighFLEX ¾″.
How many tontau do I need?
The irrigation radius is approx. 60 cm. Rule of thumb: plan one tontau element every 50–60 cm.
Where can I use tontau?
Vegetable beds, raised beds, greenhouses, flower beds - anywhere plants grow in soil. tontau is designed for outdoor gardens.
Do I need to remove tontau in winter?
It depends! German winters are not critical but clay is frost-sensitive when you leave water in. Remove all water out of the elements before the first frost. Anyhow, winter is a great time to clean your tontaus.
