Clay Irrigation System - Frequently asked questions from the community - Part 2

💧 Frequently asked questions about using tontau – and our answers

Have you looked at tontau or are you already using it – and now the first detailed questions are arising in your daily life? Great! This post is exactly for people like you. We answer four frequently asked questions from the community – directly, honestly and from experience.

🔄 Does the water have to run continuously?

In short: yes. tontau only works reliably if your system is permanently filled with water. The clay only releases water when the soil is dry – but for this to happen, water must be constantly available in the system.

What this means in concrete terms:

For the rain barrel: the tap must be open. Only in this way can water continuously flow by gravity.

At the household water connection: here too, the water must be “on” – but please be sure to work with a pressure reducer and hose burst protection! Just like with the washing machine. Our tontaus are designed for a maximum pressure of 1 bar – anything above that can damage the system.

💡 Tip: It is not enough to refill the water from time to time – tontau thrives on the constant availability of small amounts of water, which are dispensed according to the soil and demand.

🧩 Do I have to use a plug?

Yes, your tontau system must be closed at the end. Only if the water cannot escape openly from the last piece, a calm pressure equalization in the tubing system is created – and this ensures that the tontaus deliver evenly and reliably.

What can be used as a stopper?

  • a tontau ONE at the end
  • a simple cork
  • a kink in the tubing + cable tie
  • a suitable hose cap from the hardware store

🌿 We think: the best solution is the one you have at hand.

📦 Why is there no stopper in the set?

This is not an oversight – but a conscious decision. In conversations with our customers, the following often came up:

  • “I have something lying around anyway.”
  • “I'll just use an old wine cork.”
  • “I just tie a knot in the hose, done.”

We don't want to supply unnecessary accessories that end up in the shed anyway. That's why: no standard plug – more room for your own solutions. Using resources that are already available – that's entirely in line with our sustainable philosophy.

Conclusion: tontau is simple – if you keep a few things in mind.

It doesn't need an app, no electronics and no electricity. But a little care in the setup makes a big difference. In return, you get:

💧 a constant, demand-based water supply

🧘 less watering stress

🌍 a durable, plastic-free system
